  1. Sevenoaks is situated in West Kent, has excellent links into London and boasts historic towns and beautiful countryside with good schools and leisure facilities. It faces substantial development pressures and a key challenge for planning and conservation is to provide for new development while continuing to protect the historic and natural environment. Sevenoaks District Council offers great opportunities to work with over 2,000 listed buildings, including Grade I listed properties like Knole Park and Chartwell.

    The Role

    The Design and Conservation Team are responsible for providing sound expert advice on listed buildings, conservation and design aspects of planning applications to the Development Management Team, Councillors and members of the public. We also have a wide and varied work programme including updating of Conservation Area Appraisals, production of policy documents and the delivery of in-house training.

    The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team player with the ability to confidently deliver quality work efficiently and maintain and champion the reputation of the team. You will also be expected to use your knowledge of historic environment policy and experience of successful delivery to help shape the direction of the Team. This will include supporting and mentoring colleagues and inputting into the Team’s work programme.

    Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

    • Degree, Diploma or equivalent in Conservation or relevant degree
    • Suitably experienced in a Built Heritage Conservation role.
    • Able to prioritise and organise own workload to meet precise deadlines.
    • Able to work with the minimum of supervision within an agreed work programme.
    • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to produce own documents in Word and Excel.
    • Ability to cope with highly pressurised and stressful situations e.g. public meetings, inquiries.
    • Full Driving Licence

    How to get to us:

    Sevenoaks is only half an hour from central London by train. You will be based at the Council Offices, Argyle Road, Sevenoaks, Kent. TN13 1HG, however due to the current pandemic and current Government advice at the time of advert the role will require a combination of both remote and office based working. A free staff car park is available on site.
